From: UK monitoring and deposition of tephra from the May 2011 eruption of Grímsvötn, Iceland

Grímsvötn tephra shards collected in rainwater in the UK. Those in the top row were collected in Auldearn; those in the bottom row were collected on Fair Isle. Grains are brown-coloured and dominated by bubble-wall shards indicating fragmentation of a vesicular magma with bubble diameters of 5 to 50 μ m.
